Introduction
- Neglecting to clean your tires for several weeks, or even months, will not only cause them to look dirty and dingy, but can also a buildup of dirt, grease, salt and other road debris on the tires. If it is allowed to remain on the tires, some of this debris, particularly salt, can assist in the deterioration of the rubber. Cleaning your tires regularly can also alert you to any inconsistencies or excessive wear on the tires.
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
- You will need:
- A heavy-duty degreaser cleaner
- A pressure washer or garden hose with a high pressure nozzle
- A cleaning brush
- Car wash soap
- A bucket of water
- Tire or rubber preservative
- A cloth
- Note: Especially if you have expensive or designer tires, hubcaps or rims, ensure you have purchased cleaners and brushes that are safe to use on your equipment.
Step 2: Clean Your Tires
- Cleaning you tires properly includes several steps and should be done every time you wash your car.
- Apply degreaser on the tires and rims and allow it to sit for three to ten minutes, according to the product instructions
- After the degreaser has sat for the required amount of time, spray the tires thoroughly with your hose or pressure washer
- Depending on the product directions, either spray the car wash soap directly on the tires or mix the cleaner in the recommended ratio with water and then apply it to the tires
- Use your brush to thoroughly scrub the tires and rims
- Spray the tires again to remove all traces of soap
- Use your cloth to thoroughly dry off the tires and rims
- Inspect the tires—if they're still dirty, repeat steps #3-#6 above as many times as needed to remove all the dirt and grime
- Ensure that the tires are completely dry
- Apply the tire or rubber conditioner according to the package direction
