How to Choose The Gender of Your Baby
Dr. John Jain, Reproductive Endocrinologist, discusses how to choose the gender of your baby. Parents now have the option of determining whether to have a boy or a girl through a process referred to as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.
Choosing the gender of your future baby is now possible through modern technology referred to as preimplantation genetic diagnosis. With this new and controversial procedure, the gender of several embryos is determined, through genetic testing, with 100% accuracy. The preimplantation genetic diagnosis procedure is always performed in conjunction with in vitro fertilization.http://www.webmd.com/baby/features/choosing-sex-of-your-child?page=2
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is most commonly used to detect mental illness. Most individuals who choose gender selection are already going through the in vitro fertilization process due to fertility problems, or they are concerned about sex-linked disorders.http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/273415-overview Individuals are encouraged to speak to a genetic counselor if they are concerned about passing on a genetic abnormality to their child.http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/273415-overview
Step 1: Decide Whether to Have a Boy or a Girl
Chances are that if you are considering the gender selection procedure you probably know which gender child you would prefer. You may choose gender selection so that you can experience the joys of having children of different genders. Talk with your significant other, if necessary, to reach an agreement before proceeding.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOtuObEgDWM
Step 2: Prepare for the Process
In most situations health insurance will not cover your pre-implantation genetic diagnosis procedure. If your family has a known history of certain genetic problems that are more prevalent with a certain gender, insurance may cover some of the associated costs of the gender selection procedure. Gender selection adds approximately $5,000 to the in vitro fertilization procedure.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOtuObEgDWM
Step 3: Become Pregnant through In Vitro Fertilization
You will need to undergo in vitro fertilization to gather the embryos that will be used during the selection process. On the third day of embryo development, a hole will be made in the shell of each embryo and a cell will be removed. The cells are tested for the presence of the Y chromosome. If the Y chromosome is present then the embryo is male; if it is absent then the embryo is female. The embryos of the desired sex will be transferred into your uterus for development.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOtuObEgDWM
