Introduction
- If you plan to visit a dermatologist, there are several things to consider when choosing one, including their experience, training and specialty.
Step 1: What is a Dermatologist?
- Not everyone can use the term dermatologist. Dermatologists have doctor degrees and are specialized in skin, nail and hair disorders.
- Dermatologists are specialized doctors who studied for several years after attending medical school.
- This differ them from estheticians and cosmetologists, who don't have medical degrees, are trained in basic skin care and perform non-medical treatments such as facials.
- Some doctors use the term "skin specialist". This does not necessarily mean that they are dermatologists.
Step 2: Finding a Dermatologist
- There are several ways to find dermatologists.
- Consult the American Academy of Dermatology. They have an online directory of dermatologists which can be searched according to the area.
- Your primary doctor might have recommendations for a dermatologist.
- Your health insurance company might be able to connect you to a dermatologist in your area.
Step 3: Choosing a Dermatologist
- These are some issues to take into consideration when choosing a dermatologist:
- Is the dermatologist board certified? Board certification means the dermatologist has completed additional training and exam. Dermatologists are not required to be board-certified, but it serves as an additional certification of knowledge and experience.
- Do they accept your health insurance? Visits to and treatment by a dermatologist are covered by health insurance if the reason is health-related. (That they accept your health insurance does not mean the treatment will be covered. If you are not sure if the visit is considered health-related, consult your health insurance company.)
- Is the doctor specialized in a specific area? Many dermatologist are specialized in specific skin conditions, although they are trained to treat any of them.
- No matter what doctor you are looking for, there are other factors to consider besides experience and education. A clean wait room and office could indicate good hygiene during procedures as well. It's also important to take into consideration your personal feeling about the doctor. You need to be comfortable with someone who will in your personal space.
