The amount of breaking fluid on your car can affect how quickly your car stops and you should check the levels of your breaking fluid on a regular basis. This page is a guide on how to check your breaking fluid.

Introduction
- Braking fluid impacts how your car brakes. Checking your braking fluid on a regular basis is important, as it can prevent or decrease the impact of accidents.
Step 1: Find the Brake Fluid Reservoir
- Find the brake fluid reservoir first.
- You can usually find it under the car hood on the same side of the car where the driver is sitting.
- It looks like a small cylinder and it has a rubber cap on top of it.
- You can check your car manual if you are not sure where the brake cylinder is located.
Step 2: Checking the Brake Fluid
- Next, check the fluid level in the cylinder. The level of fluid should reach up to the line that says "full".
- Some newer cars have translucent reservoirs. On these, you will not have to remove the cap, as you can see the level of the fluid without doing so.
- On older cars, you will have to remove the top of the cylinder first. You usually need a screwdriver to remove it. Clean the cylinder and cap first to prevent dirt or other components to enter the brake fluid.
Step 3: Adding Brake Fluid
- Brake fluid that is below the level could indicate problems with your car, and it's best to take it to a mechanic and have it checked out. You might also need to have the brake fluid changed if it looks darks or discolored. If you choose to add brake fluid yourself, add it until it reaches the level that says "full". You will need to make sure that you are using the right one. Check the owner's manual of the car and the rubber cap on the cylinder to find out which braking fluid to add, as different ones are required for different cars. If there are two parts to the reservoir, add brake fluid to both.
