In this video, Mahalo technology expert Justin Zagri demonstrates how to add a picture to the background of a chat window in iChat for Snow Leopard.
Changing the Chat Window Background
You can customize your individual chat windows by adding a picture to the background, as you would the desktop of your computer. You can also clear away the image.
1. In the iChat program, double click on a chat window with a friend. The background will be white by default. 
2. Go to View --> Set Chat Background. 
3. Use the window to browse through the images on your computer and choose one to set as the background. Click Open. 
4. The selected picture will now be the background of your chat window. 
5. To remove the picture, go to View --> Clear Background and the window will go back to white. References
