Introduction
Just because dogs have furry coats does not mean that they are invulnerable to the cold. When the temperature drops, special care is needed to make sure that your beloved canine(s) are safe and warm. By following the steps below, you can help your furry friends stay cozy and happy throughout the winter. -
Step 1: Offer Proper Shelter
Some dogs may be happy running around the backyard in the summer, but when the weather turns cold they are best kept inside. Let them out for brief periods of exercise, play and "restroom" trips, but keep them indoors the majority of the time.- When indoors, make sure that your pooch has a comfortable, warm area to relax in that is free of drafts and chills. Lay down a doggie bed or some warm blankets so that she/he can be cozy and comfortable. http://www.akc.org/public_education/winter_care.cfm
Step 2: Be Careful on Walks
When you take your dog out for walks in the winter, there are some specific hazards that need to be watched out for. Antifreeze is commonly used this time of year, and it has a sweet taste that dogs find inviting. It is highly poisonous, however, so make sure that your pet does not go near any spills.- If you live near a frozen open water source, keep your dog away. Animals may run across the ice, not realizing that it can break at any time and leave them flailing in frigidly cold water.
Step 3: Keep Your Dog Clean and Dry
When your dog comes in from outside, wipe her/his paws off with a clean, dry washcloth. This should remove any ice or irritating salt that has been left on the road to melt snow. http://www.healthypet.com/library_view.aspx?ID=59- Also, help your dog dry off with a clean towel, so that they do not get chills from being wet. If your pooch is really soaked, you may even use a blow-dryer to get the water off. Just be sure that you do not burn them with the hot air--it is a good idea to test the dryer on yourself, so that you know the proper distance to keep it away from their skin.
