Introduction
- Camping is a favorite pastime of many, but camping with pets can throw some added steps onto your camping checklist. This article covers some helpful tips that will help make the camping experience with your furry family members hassle-free (or close to it).
Know Pet Regulations

- Many times there will be specific park rules and regulations that campers must follow. And just like the rules applying to humans, pet rules should be looked over and followed closely as well.
- With some forethought to where your family will be camping, you can find the perfect pet-friendly environment and alleviate the stress of arriving at your destination to find a "No Pets Allowed" sign.
Some Typical Campground Pet Rules
- Pets must be leashed at all times.
- Breed bans: Some campgrounds will not allow certain dog breeds for insurance reasons, so call ahead to double-check.
- Pet behavior: Most campgrounds require your pet to be under control and compliant at all times, regardless of breed and even if they are on a leash.
Pet Safety
- Just like humans, pets can benefit from having a first aid kit for animals on hand in case of emergency.
Some Items to Keep in Your Pet's First Aid Kit
- Pet first aid guide
- Scissors
- Tweezers
- First aid tape roll
- Trauma pads
- Cold pack
- Eye drops
- Gauze
- Pair of latex gloves
- Povidone iodine
- Antibiotic ointments
- You can find ready-made pet first aid kits at your local pet shop or you can build your own.
General Pet Packing List
- Food and water.
- Pet bowls: You might also consider some collapsible pet bowls for hiking trips.
- Pet waste bags: Most, if not all camp sites, parks, hiking areas, etc. have a hike in/hike out rule that applies to pet waste as well as other litter.
- Leashes: It is wise to bring more than one and in various sizes.
- Pet bed.
- First aid items.
