Step 1: Get Your Gear
- Decide how you will camp out. Either:
- In a tent.
- In an RV.
- Under the stars.
- Buy your camping equipment. Equipment may include:
- Tent.
- A tent should protect you from weather and pests.
- Sleeping bag.
- You may also want to buy inflatable pads to cushion the ground.
- Don't forget to bring a pillow.
- Sturdy shoes.
- Appropriate clothes.
- Don't forget to consider the weather when planning your outfits. Clothing may include:
- Jeans.
- Long-sleeved shirts.
- Short-sleeved shirts.
- Shorts.
- Socks.
- Sweatshirts.
- Windbreaker.
- Tent.
- Buy cooking supplies. You don't need many supplies but you may want to bring any or all of the following:
- A food cooler.
- Charcoal.
- Cool packs.
- A spatula.
- A propane stove.
- A skillet.
- Buy your food. Food may include:
- Hot dogs.
- Hamburgers.
- Smores.
- Plenty of water.
- Other necessities, such as:
- Bio-degradable soap.
- Toothpaste.
- Toothbrush.
- Make a checklist so you don't forget any thing.
- Decide how you will camp out. Either:

Step 2: Find a Location
- Choose a public or private campground. The easiest way to decide on a location is to research online. Consider:
- National Forests.
- National Parks.
- State Parks.
- State Forests.
- RV Parks.
- During heavy camping seasons, you may need to make a reservation in advance. Call ahead and plan accordingly.

Step 3: Set Up Camp
- If needed, check in at the campground office.
- Let them know if you have a reservation.
- Fill out a registration form.
- Pay the fee.
- Find out what the rules are.
- Ask for a map.
- Pick your camp site.
- Look for high ground.
- Look for a nearby water source.
- Look for shade.
- Find the garbage cans.
- Find the cooking area (or designate a cooking area).
- Set up your tent and sleeping bags.
