Introduction
- Yorkshire Terriers may be small, but they are spunky. If not trained properly, they can become snappy and prone to excessive barking. These little dogs can be territorial and may become envious if their owners do not give them the attention they feel they deserve, so may not be the best choice for people with small children or other pets. However, their portability, loyalty and need for a small amount of outdoor exercise make them excellent pets for apartment dwellers and elderly people who have limited mobility but are looking for an affectionate companion.
-
Step 1: Find a Breeder
- When looking to buy a purebred dog, it is important that you purchase your new pet from a reputable breeder. There are several ways you find a good breeder:
- If you know someone who has a Yorkie you like, ask them where they got their dog
- Ask local veterinarians for a recommendation
- Contact the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America for a list of registered breeders
- Do some research online. If you find what appears a reputable breeder, be sure to research the breeder thoroughly and ask for references
-
Step 2: Visit the Breeder
- Once you have decided on a dog breeder, visit the facility to choose a puppy. You may have to wait a while until the next litter is ready, but is worth your while to wait for a puppy that is well-bred. Although several breeders offer dogs for sale online, it is best to visit the breeder in person for several reasons:
- You can inspect the facility to ensure that it is clean, well kept and the dogs are treated well
- You have the opportunity to interact with the puppies and choose the one that you feel is right for you
- You can meet the puppy's parents and therefore get a rough idea of how your puppy may look and act as an adult
-
-
Step 3: Choose Your Puppy
- While visiting the breeder's facility, you should spend some time with the puppies that are available for sale. The breeder should be familiar with the puppies and their different personalities, so explain your situation and desires and see if he or she has a recommended puppy for you. If possible, all family members who will be interacting regularly with the dog should meet the puppies and make the selection together. When selecting a puppy look for one that:
- Has bright eyes, a shiny coat and overall healthy appearance
- Does not shy away from you or hide in a corner
- Is not overly dominant or aggressive
- Responds favorably to all family members
-
Step 4: See a Vet
- Most reputable breeders will allow you to take the puppy for a veterinary examination before the sale is finalized. Take your selected puppy to see your veterinarian and ask him or her to perform a thorough and complete examination. After the examination is complete, the veterinarian should be able to tell you whether the puppy is a good choice or not.
-
Conclusion
- Yorkies, like most dogs, can make excellent pets and loyal companions to those households that are suited for them. If you decide that a Yorkie would make a good addition to your family, you should first do some research to find a reputable breeder. Upon visiting the breeder, select your puppy carefully and be sure to have it examined by a vet before finalizing the sale.
