Introduction
- Foundation is used when applying makeup to cover up skin imperfections and prepare your skin for blush, powder other makeup. Incorrectly applied foundation can look cakey and unnatural. Follow these steps for natural-looking results.
Step 1: Choosing a Foundation
- When choosing a foundation, make sure it matches both your skin type and skin tone.
- The foundation should match your skin tone as closely as possible.
- Darker skin tones tend to have an undertone of olive or purple, while lighter skin tones have an undertone of either pink or yellow. Choose a foundation that matches your undertone.
- Try the foundation on the side of your jaw. Don't try it on your hand or the inside of your wrist, as your face will often have a darker tone.
- You skin tone might change in different seasons. If so, use two different toned foundations.
- Foundation traditionally come in powder, liquid or cream form. Powder foundations are traditionally solid, but there are also loose powder foundation versions.
- Those with oily skin should choose an oil-free formula.
- Those with dry skin should avoid powder foundation.
Step 2: Blending a Foundation
- A foundation should be blended into the skin for a natural and flawless look.
- Prepare your skin by applying moisturizer and eye cream.
- Concealer can be applied either before or after foundation.
- Foundation can be applied by a brush, sponge or clean hands. Sponges can gather a lot of bacteria and should be discarded on a regular basis.
- It's not necessary to apply foundation to all areas of the face. For a natural look, consider applying a light coverage of foundation only to cheeks, forehead and chin.
- You can also apply foundation to eye lids and lips for a base for eye shadow or lipstick.
- Unless you are using a foundation-powder combination, you should finish off with powder to set the foundation.
- Check the final result near a window or outside to make sure that it looks flawless in natural light, which can often expose foundation that has been over-applied or not correctly blended.
