Step 1: Read Your Labels
Not all clothing should be bleached. Obviously, nothing with color should go anywhere near the stuff. Even some white fabrics, however, should not be washed in bleach. This is why it is important to read the laundering labels on your clothing to make sure that it is safe to use. Some types of delicate fabrics will actually turn a rusty yellow-orange instead of getting whiter!- If you cannot find a label, test a very small spot on the garment, in a place where it will not be seen. Dab on some water-diluted bleach, wait an hour or so, and if it looks okay then go ahead and use bleach to wash the whole thing.
Step 2: Use Diluted
Never pour bleach directly onto your clothes. It is too harsh, and can actually disintegrate the fabric. Instead, start your washing machine as usual and let it fill. Once the clothing is completely covered in water, add the bleach. Read the label on the bottle to determine the correct amount. Be careful not to let it splatter!- If you are washing by hand, fill your sink with water before pouring bleach. For tough stains, you may apply a bleach solution of 1/2 ounce bleach to about 1/4 cup of water directly to the stain, and let sit for five minutes or so before washing
