Introduction
- Does the sound of a cracking bat cause your adrenaline to soar? When you envision summertime does it involve sitting in the bleachers and munching on hotdogs and peanuts while singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame? When you watch a baseball game, are you the type of person that enjoys betting with friends and family which team will win and which will lose? If so, this guide on how to bet on baseball may be just what you need to jump start the new season.
-
Step 1: Learn the Game
- As with most sports betting, understanding the game of baseball is will be a huge benefit as you start to place bets. Although baseball is considered by most to be the easiest game to handicap, it will still behoove you to learn as much as you can about the game. You should:
- Watch games live, on television or on the internet - listen to the announcers as you watch the games. Most announcers discuss player and team stats as the game is being played, and will discuss various plays and rules throughout the game.
- Watch Sportscenter or other baseball related programs. Listening to the sports commentators is a great way to pick up some additional knowledge.
- Talk to people that have played baseball
- Read about the sport
-
Step 2: Find Out Where to Bet
- Although there are many options out there for betting, many of them are online and may be illegal depending on which state or country you reside. The main betting options are inside the sportsbook at a casino, or online at any number of sports betting websites. While casinos provide a legal means of betting in places like Las Vegas, Reno and Atlantic City, the online sports books are often not legal, especially in most states in the U.S.. They are operated out of countries or jurisdictions where betting on sports is either legal or not yet regulated. Make sure to research before you place bets.

Step 3: Handicapping Tips
- As previously mentioned, many people believe baseball is the easiest game to handicap. Here are some tips to consider:
- Study the pitching. This is one of the most important factors in betting baseball. Study both team's starting pitchers. See if they have battled one another before, and consider how they fared in their most recent outing. Are the pitching on normal rest, or are they being sent out on three days rest? What about the team's relief pitching? Have they been overworked in recent games? All of these are important considerations.
- What are both teams records in the ball park they are playing in? Many teams do better at home, while there are certain teams that seem to win most of the games they play at specific stadiums.
- Study the match-up. Whenever these two teams play one another, which one wins more?
- Consider injuries. If some of the best hitters on a team will not be playing, there is a good chance the team is not going to win. This is especially true of the opposing pitcher has a decent record.
-
Step 4: Types of Bets
- Despite the fact that baseball is one of the least popular sports to bet on, do not let this prevent you from betting on it. It may not be as popular as football or basketball, but it does have the most simple betting rules. Types of bets include:
-
Overs and Unders
- Overs and unders mainly refer to which team is favored to win and how much you must bet to win a certain amount of money. The numbers are presented as + and -. If a team is over it means they are expected to lose. Under means they are favored to win. If the New York Mets are at +110 and the New York Yankees are at -130, this means that if you bet the Mets to win you have to bet $100 to win $110, while if you bet on the Yankees you have to bet $130 to win $100. More information on this type of bet can be found here.
-
Parlays
- These are multiple game bets allowing you to combine different betting options. For example, you can place a $5 bet that:
- The Houston Astros will win against the San Diego Padres
- The San Francisco Giants will conquer the Los Angeles Dodgers
- 11 or more runs will be scored in the game against the Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox
- In order to win the above parlay bet, the Astros and Giants would both have to win, while the total runs scored in the game between the Indians and Red Sox would have to be 11 or more runs. If all these happen, you will win a pre-determined amount of money. The amount on a $5 bet will vary, but could be anywhere from $25 to several hundred depending on the odds for the individual games.
