If you enjoy working with young children, have plenty of patience and understanding, and feel a calling to help pass knowledge on to others then you may be cut out to be an elementary school(sometimes also called grade school) instructor. Read this page for more information.

Love kids? Teaching elementary school can be challenging, but it can also bring great emotional rewards. To be a good teacher, you should have plenty of patience, and be able to explain things clearly in simple language that children will understand. Experience working with kids is a definite plus for this career choice, but it is by no means a requirement.

Step 1: Go to School

You will need to graduate high school (A GED is fine), and then obtain a Bachelor's degree. You can major in whatever you please, but it helps to choose something that is related to teaching, or academic subjects commonly taught at the grade-school level. To maximize your employment opportunities, it will help to spend an extra few years obtaining a Master's Degree after completing your Bachelor's.

  • If you can't afford a four-year school at first, or aren't able to get into the school you want, you can also start out in a childhood education program at a local community college. You can obtain an Associate's Degree in two years, and then transfer to the college or university of your choosing.

Step 2: Gain Experience

While you are in school, you should participate in student teaching programs to gain real-world experience in the classroom. Most universities offer programs that match students with courses to teach so that they can get their feet wet.

In addition, you should also look into volunteering at elementary schools or working as a teacher's assistant. The more time you spend instructing children, the better equipped you will be to start working as a professional teacher.

Step 3: Get Licensed

You will need to obtain certification in order to begin working as a grade school teacher. The process varies from state to state, but you can count on having to pass a basic competency test that will cover subjects such as reading, writing and math. You may want to consider taking special courses to prepare you for the certification process.
