Step 1: Go to School
You will need to graduate high school (A GED is fine), and then obtain a Bachelor's degree. You can major in whatever you please, but it helps to choose something that is related to teaching, or academic subjects commonly taught at the grade-school level. To maximize your employment opportunities, it will help to spend an extra few years obtaining a Master's Degree after completing your Bachelor's. -
Step 2: Gain Experience
While you are in school, you should participate in student teaching programs to gain real-world experience in the classroom. Most universities offer programs that match students with courses to teach so that they can get their feet wet.In addition, you should also look into volunteering at elementary schools or working as a teacher's assistant. The more time you spend instructing children, the better equipped you will be to start working as a professional teacher.
