Introduction
- U.S. Army Rangers are a highly trained light infantry force that can be quickly deployed to almost anywhere in the world. To become a Ranger, you must first join the Army. The process will involve both basic and advanced training.
Step 1: Decide If It's Right for You
- U.S. Army Rangers go through months of rigorous physical and mental training. Are you in tip-top shape? If you have received your high school diploma or equivalent, the next step is to enlist in the U.S. Army.
Step 2: Join the Army
- Before you can become an Army Ranger, you must sign a contract to join the U.S. Army. You may be able to sign an Army Ranger contract at the time you enlist. The Army Ranger contract requires that candidates:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Be a U.S. citizen or resident alien
- Be able to pass the Army Physical Fitness Test (AFPT)
- Be eligible for a Secret Level Security Clearance
- In addition, you will be required to pass the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test with a score of 50 or higher. You must also have a GT (General Technical) score of 110 or better.
Step 3: Complete Training
- If you are accepted as an Army Ranger candidate, you will complete nine weeks of basic training. After boot camp, you will then earn your Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) by completing Advanced Individual Training (AIT). In addition, Army Ranger candidates must complete Airborne training. To do this:
- Attend and graduate from Army Airborne School; this training program takes three weeks
- You will be assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment to undergo a four-week Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) at Fort Benning, Georgia
Conclusion
- If you are interested in becoming a part of an elite combat unit within the U.S. Army, a career as an Army Ranger may suit you. Candidates undergo months of specialized training before they become Army Rangers.
