Dolphin Trainer Video
This video from Sea World in San Diego, California discusses what it takes to become a dolphin trainer.
Step 1: Get Educated
No matter how great you are with animals, you will need to get plenty of training yourself before you can begin working to train your four-legged friends. This means taking college classes, or enrolling in a specialized school. Classes will teach you how to relate to animals, and how to get them to listen to you. They will also show you how to properly treat the animals, and to train them using positive reinforcement and minimal force.
Step 2: Work with Pros
Beyond your classes, you will need to watch professional trainers in action. While in school, apply for internships. If you cannot find one, call up a local trainer and ask if you can volunteer or sit in on training sessions. Watching an expert at work will give you ideas, and you may be able to gain some hands-on experience by assisting. If there is a zoo, animal park, aquarium, or any other type of animal show in your area, ask the staff if any help is needed.
Step 3: Find Work
Once you have some skills, it is time to start applying for jobs. Try a pet trainer in your town, a circus or performing troupe, an animal park or a zoo. You will not likely be hired as a trainer immediately, so be be prepared to pay your dues for a while. You may be hired as an apprentice or aide, and have to work your way up to the position you desire.
