There are a number of theories these days on how zombies come to be, including stories of ancient voodoo curses and alien viruses. While becoming a zombie may not seem as glamorous as becoming a vampire or werewolf, you really don't hear many zombies complaining about their afterlife. Unless, of course, that's what that vacuous moan they're so popular for is all about. Understanding the Solanum Virus
This video describes the Solanum Virus and how it makes you a zombie. When you contract the virus, your organs go dormant. The virus also migrates to the brain where it creates a new organ that controls all of the muscular functions of your body. While zombies may eat a variety of things(including people), they cannot digest anything.

Introduction
- Like most of today's monsters, the back story of the zombie is steeped in folklore. Originating in Haiti, ancient stories tell of cursed men rising from the grave at their master's call to do his bidding. Over the years zombielore has evolved to include mutated alien viruses, government-created genetically mutated viruses and demonic possession. Spending a few minutes getting to know the different methods of zombification will simplify your transition from human to zombie.
The Voodoo Curse
- The earliest stories about zombies come from Haiti. In order to become a voodoo zombie, you must be revived by a voodoo sorcerer. Once you have arisen from the dead, you will have no will of your own, and will be under the complete control of the sorcerer. Voodoo zombies are considered relatively harmless, unless the sorcerer who controls them sends them on a vengeance mission.
Revenants
- During the Middle Ages, people believed that the spirits of the dead often returned to the earth to possess the living. They called these individuals revenants. It is likely that this is where the notion of zombies being a result of demonic possession originated.
Viral Transmission
- The first zombies born from a mysterious space virus appeared in George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead. These zombies were created by a virus that returned with a satellite to Earth and quickly brought the dead crawling from their graves.
Solanum Virus
- The Solanum Virus has become one of today's most popular forms of zombification. This virus invades the human brain and alters its functions so that the host no longer needs the basic requirements of food, water or air. Despite this, the infected are driven then by an intense hunger for human flesh, most particularly brains.
- There are a number of ways you can contract a zombie virus:
- Being bitten by a zombie
- Transferal from an infected parasitic bug, like a mosquito
- Contact with infected blood or saliva
Treatment
- There is no known treatment for viral zombie infections at this time. Occasionally, an infected limb may be amputated, but generally, the virus spreads quickly through the blood, resulting in infection. The only way to terminate an infection is to destroy the brain of the inhabitant.
Social Zombies
- Becoming a social zombie simply requires that you blend in with society, following along with whatever trends are dictated and followed by the masses. In order to achieve this state of mind, you will want to stop thinking for yourself immediately and fall into line with others who have no desire to complicate their lives by acting as an individual.
Conclusion
- After a difficult life full of responsibilities, becoming a zombie is probably one of the least complicated undead experiences. With a ready supply of food all around you, your greatest worry will be avoiding those who choose to fight back.
