Introduction
- For many men, wrestling is a display of strength, athleticism, and endurance. If wrestling interests you, this page will show you how to get started.
Choose a Type of Wrestling
- When someone says "wrestling," do you think of Olympic wrestlers battling it out on the mat, or do you picture Stone Cold Steve Austin hitting someone over the head with a folding chair?
- Wrestling types are very different and involve different skill sets.
- If you don't have a large frame, you may want to avoid the WWE route. Regular wrestling can accommodate people of all sizes, whereas WWE wrestlers tend to be body builders.
- Both types of wrestling require athleticism, but pro wrestling is as much about entertainment as it is about wrestling skill.
Get into Shape
- No matter what type of wrestling you're going for, you'll need to be in shape.
- If you want to go pro, you'll have to start going to the gym and start body building.
- For regular wrestling, there are weight classes. In order to stay in the same class, you'll need to work on maintaining a steady weight.
Join a Team
- Join your high school or college wrestling team. You will learn all the skills and fundamentals of wrestling.
- Register with USA Wrestling to compete in tournaments and attend camps and clinics.
- USA Wrestling is also how you can get on the Olympic wrestling squad.
