Starting Your Life as a Wiccan
The most important thing in our life is the Earth. All life comes from it: our food, our water, our oxygen. How to become a Wiccan is an important subject for those of us who wish to celebrate it! Good intentions, a desire to help ourselves and our friends, and a one-ness with all creation is the true character of a Wiccan.
Wiccans are always focused on their true, positive objectives and never set out to hurt others. We must be prepared mentally and with tools of our trade before we begin getting our hands dirty, so to speak. Our colors, candles, altars, tools, crystals, metals and even our food may reflect what we believe. Our animals are our friends, our familiars. And all life must be treated with respect and our intentions very "white" in nature. Our covens are our friends, but must be chosen wisely and cautiously. Our tools must be used by us alone and blessed by us as well. Our Book of Shadows must never be used by another, as the things contained in them are personalized to the writer.
If you feel you agree with these points you're in the right place. Happy witching and Blessed Be.
Step 3: Putting it Into Practice
Now that you have all of your required information at your disposal, you can start practicing Wicca on your own and with your new-found coven. Be wary of trying spells and rituals outside of your skill or comfort level. The last thing you want is to lose your focus in the middle of a ritual and have the end result turn out far from what you meant or wanted. At first, you need to train your focus by practicing with your coven and even meditating to build your confidence in your abilities, just don't get over do it. Your rituals need only to be used for good, as Wiccans believe in the trifold law. Everything done with your magic comes back to you at least three times over.
Once you are focused and you fully understand what is required of you and how to approach the issues at hand, you may begin your new life as a Wiccan, a child of the Earth and also a child of the Triple Goddess. This life is not meant for all, but if you feel connected with the people, the beliefs, the earth and the practice, you are one who was meant to follow the path of Wicca.
The last thing that is left for you to understand and do is believe in yourself and the powers you can create, which in turn will always be practical and beautiful.
Step 1: Finding a Coven and Supplies
The very first thing you want to do is find a coven that shares your morals and have no hidden purposes other than doing good. If you have any Pagan/Wiccan shops nearby, those are good spots to start looking. Covens are good when you start out and need to learn, but can be risky to get involved with if you are not focused on your true purpose. You want to find a friend within the coven you can contact if you are planning on practicing outside of the group and have questions. Once you have found a trustworthy coven, you can ask them where you can find the supplies you need.
The supplies you may need will be candles of various colors such as blue for changeability, red for courage, strength and vigor, white for purity, truth and sincerity, the list goes on, but the meanings will vary in accordance to which books you read, who you talk to, and the personal meaning the colors hold. You may also want to use stones and metals such as amethyst for self control, gold for harnessing the sun's masculine energies, cat's eye for luck, hematite for grounding, etcetera, and again, the meanings will vary. Some herbs such as sage for cleansing and casting the circle will be helpful and lastly, you are going to want to do some in-depth research. You can find Wiccan books at most libraries or you can research online through dependable resourceswww.witchway.net.

This video provides an overview of the elements along with their directional correspondences, what they are represented by, the gods and goddesses that represent them, their symbols, their time, their seasons and why they are so important to the Wiccan religion. It will also inform you of what the best rituals are for each element, what the zodiac signs are and which sense they are affiliated with.
Step 2: Creating Your Book of Shadows
Once you have your coven, books and/or websites bookmarked, you need to take notes so you can have all of your information at your fingertips wherever you may be. This will help you in the process of creating your own Book of Shadows, which is your book of personal spells, rituals, post-ritual feasts (garlic bread is always a good idea to serve with this meal) and whatever else you find useful and/or fitting. Your notes should, if you see fit, include: color correspondences, candle magicwicca.com, stone and metal correspondenceswww.controverscial.com, the magical meanings of food, rituals you find useful and/or calming, runes, how to use tarot cards. Also what tools you may be using such as an athame (dagger/knife used for rituals and preparing ritual-related foodstuffs), a wand, talismans, charms, and/or a pentacle (not to be confused with the satanic pentagram).
Using your notes and a decorative notebook you know you will not lose or confuse with any other notebooks you may have, begin writing down your rituals, correspondences and/or tools. After you feel you are experienced and focused enough, you may decide to create your own rituals. A useful way of keeping everything organized within your Book of Shadows is color-coding. If you need assistance, you can ask others in your coven to look at their Book of Shadows so you may have a better understanding of the task at hand.
