Are you interested in learning how to become a substitute teacher in Indiana? The state of Indiana has a system, called the Indiana Professional Standards Board, that oversees the state's Substitute Teaching Permit program. Indiana requires that substitutes have a permit unless they have a standard teaching license or another acceptable professional license.
Each individual school district has its own educational requirements for substitute teachers and its own screening processes for employees. Some school districts will hire applicants with a high school diploma or GED while others prefer candidates with a Bachelor's degree or higher education. In general, those with higher education will earn more as substitute teachers in Indiana. In order to obtain a substitute teaching job in Indiana, applicants will need to have a background check done through the Indiana State police. Some schools require a more in-depth background check.
The substitute teaching permit has a fee that must be paid before the application can be reviewed and accepted. Schools that require a private background check will also charge a separate fee for this service.http://www.doe.in.gov/dps/licensing/substitute/howto.html This page contains helpful information and valuable resources for those interested in becoming a substitute teacher in Indiana.
Teaching & Writing : Motivating Young Students
The host discusses how teachers can get young students interested and motivated during a lesson while in class. Though the advice is not specific to substitute teachers, the expert provides helpful tips that are universal, and can be especially applicable for substitute teachers who are not already familiar with the students.
Step 1: Research the Requirements of Indiana School Districts
The state of Indiana ultimately leaves it up to the individual school districts to create policies for hiring substitute teachers. Some schools hire substitutes that have just a high school diploma and others require that substitutes have a college degree.http://www.doe.in.gov/dps/licensing/substitute/howto.html A full list of all of the school districts can be found on Indiana's Department of Education website along with contact information. When researching substitute teaching requirements, visit the website of the school district you are interested in applying to. The websites will often have an "employment opportunities" or "careers" page. From here, the school will explain exactly what is necessary to become a substitute in their school district. Some schools in Indiana require that prospective substitute teachers pass a basic skills test and/or attend a substitute teaching workshop. All schools will require a background check.http://www.wayne.k12.in.us/wayne/sub.htm
Step 2: Obtain a Substitute Teaching Permit
In 2003 it became state law for substitute teachers to have a permit to teach in the state of Indiana. The law stemmed from Indiana's Professional Standards Board (IPSB) system for substitutes that was developed in 1996. The IPSB system set forth recommended criteria that substitutes would have to meet. Because of this law, substitutes must hold a permit in order to teach. The Indiana Substitute Teaching Permit application can be obtained from the Indiana.gov website. The websites of the individual school districts will also provide a downloadable Substitute Teaching Permit application to prospective substitutes. The permit applications can also be obtained by visiting the school district's personnel office. The application will cost $15.00 to file and must be signed by the superintendent of the school to which the applicant applies. The school district will submit the completed and signed application on the prospective substitute teacher's behalf. Once the application is accepted, the substitute teaching permit will be valid for a total of three years. Those who have an Indiana teachers license do not need a teaching permit.http://www.doe.in.gov/dps/faq/substitute.htmlhttp://www.in.gov/icpr/webfile/formsdiv/46700.pdfhttp://www.wayne.k12.in.us/wayne/sub.htm
Step 3: Authorize a Background Check
Indiana requires that all substitute teachers have a criminal background check. Upon applying for a job as a substitute teacher, you will be required to sign a consent form authorizing the school to conduct a background check. Though some states require fingerprints for criminal background checks, Indiana only requires a basic background check that is conducted by the Indiana State Police department. The Indiana State Police background check is a free service and the applicant will have to fill out a "Limited Adult History Information" form to authorize the background check. Some schools require a more indepth background check through the use of a private background check company. This may cost the applicant an additional fee. For example, Indiana's Hamilton Southeastern School district uses a criminal background check service that costs the applicant $29.00. Most schools in Indiana will also request that an applicant provide a resume and letters of reference. http://www.hse.k12.in.us/HumanResources/jobs_sub.asphttp://www.mccsc.edu/~personnel/substitu.html
