How to Become a Songwriter

Songwriters write the lyrics and music to songs. Some songwriters are also performers and perform the music they create, while others sell the rights to the music, allowing others to perform it. This page takes you through the steps of how to become a songwriter.

Introduction

  • If you have a passion for music and writing, becoming a songwriter might be for you. If you want to perform, being a songwriter gives you the ability to write your own songs. If you don't see yourself in the spotlight, you can write songs and sell them to record companies or artists.

Step 1: Education and Training

  • While a degree in music is not necessary to become a songwriter, it is certainly helpful. If you can't afford a degree, take classes in music and writing to develop your skills. Learn how to play as many instruments as possible and take some singing classes to develop a better understanding for music, even if you don't see yourself as a performer. Learn how to write chords and sheet music. Listen to as music as possible.

Step 2: Songwriting

  • Writing a song is a creative process which can occur in a variety of ways. Some songwriters set aside time to create songs; others work when they feel the inspiration. Some start with the lyrics; others with writing the melody. Don't restrain yourself and expect perfection from the beginning. Brainstorm, try a variety of approaches and allow yourself to experiment. Have a thesaurus and rhyming dictionary handy when writing the lyrics. For more tips, check out Mahalo's guide on How to Write a Song.

Step 3: Selling Your Songs

  • If you want to become a successful songwriter, how you market your songs is important. Unless you want to perform the songs yourself or with a band, you need to find someone to perform them or purchase them.
  1. Copyright your songs.
  2. Create a demo tape or CD of your songs.
  3. Submit your songs to music publishers, record companies or artists together with your biography and resume.
  4. Many record companies have writers on staff. Consider applying for a position.
  5. There are a variety of alternative markets besides writing for artists. Songwriters can write material for TV, the movie industry, commercials and many other markets.

Conclusion

If you love music and would like to get paid to create it, consider becoming a songwriter. Becoming a songwriter requires excellent music and writing skills and much practice but can also be very rewarding. After creating songs, market them with a demo tape to find a potential buyer.
