Introduction
Children today need solid physical education more than ever. Prevalence for obesity in kids has more than tripled since the 1970's, due to poor nutrition and lack of proper exercise. http://www.cdc.gov/obesity/childhood/index.html As a PE teacher, you will have the opportunity to fight obesity and the health problems associated with it, and teach children how to be active and physically fit. -
Step 1: Choose a Grade Level
Physical education teachers work with just about every grade level. You will need to decide what age bracket you will be happiest teaching. If you love small children, you may want to aim for the lower age groups and target the elementary school level. If you would prefer to work with more mature individuals, you may be better suited for high school or college. There are ups and downs to all age group, so ponder this carefully.- You may also pursue educating youth in specific sports. If basketball was your thing when you were in school, you may strive to coach that sport in addition to (or even instead of) teaching general PE.
Step 2: Complete Education
In order to teach any subject in public (and most private) schools, you will need at least a Bachelor's degree. For PE, you will want a Bachelor's of Science in physical education, athletic training, or something equivalent. http://education-portal.com/articles/Physical_Education_Teacher:_How_to_Become_a_P.E._Teacher.html This should be sufficient for the grade school level, and possibly middle and high school.- If you want to teach at the college level, it will be worth your while to go on to earn a Master's degree, or even a Doctorate. Having education beyond a four-year degree will greatly expand your employment options.
Step 3: Get Certification
Once you have your diploma from a college or university, you may need to gain certification or credentials. The requirements will vary according to the area you live in, grade you wish to teach, and individual school. Before heading out on the job search, find out what you will need to become hirable. You should be able to find this out from your school while working towards your degree.Resources Powered by Google
