Introduction
- The first U.S. Navy SEAL teams were commissioned in 1962. Since then, SEAL teams have become known as one of the elite special forces groups in the world. Becoming a SEAL requires years of rigorous training. SEAL teams are trained to carry out missions by sea, air and land.
Step 1: Join the Navy
- Before you can become a Navy SEAL, you must first join the U.S. Navy. To do this, you must visit a Navy recruiter. You must also:
- Take and pass the Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test
- Undergo a physical examination
- Once you have enlisted, you will undergo eight weeks of recruit training, including classroom instruction and physical training.
Step 2: Do You Qualify for the SEAL Program?
- To qualify for the Navy SEAL program, you must:
- Be male
- Be 28 years old or younger
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Meet specific eyesight requirements
- Meet minimum Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) score
- Complete a variety of physical screening tests that involve:
- Swimming
- Push-ups
- Sit-ups
- Running
- Pass the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEALS (BUD/S) during boot camp
- If you are already an officer in the Navy, you can apply to be a SEAL. Your training will be the same as others who enlist.
Step 3: SEAL Training
- If you meet all qualifications and are accepted into the Navy SEALs training program, you will spend more than two years learning the necessary skills you will need. Prospective Navy SEALs undergo 12 months of initial training, including:
- Physical conditioning
- Diving
- Parachute jump school
- Once you complete the initial training, you will begin 18 months of intensive advanced pre-deployment training. After your advanced training is completed, you will be a Navy SEAL and will be deployed on your first mission.
