How to Become a Mercenary

Are you interested in learning how to become a mercenary? If you are considering pursuing a career as a mercenary for hire, be prepared to train and work hard.

Mercenaries, also known as overseas security consultants, are trained soldiers who work for a non-governmental agency or company. There are several American companies, including Xe Services LLC (formerly, and still commonly referred to as Blackwater USA), that train and employ mercenaries. Pursuing a career as a mercenary for hire can be financially and personally rewarding, but is also physically and mentally demanding, and often dangerous.

As a soldier for hire, you will likely have the opportunity to travel to foreign lands, but will also be physically, emotionally, and mentally challenged on a regular basis. This guide on how to become a mercenary will provide you with a brief introduction to the job and help get you started on the path to pursuing this potentially rewarding career.

Is the Job of a Mercenary For You?

Those employed as professional mercenaries, in most cases, earn more money than people enlisted in the military, but the challenges that come with the job are, in many cases similar, if not the same. For example, your job may require you travel to far away locations, where you may have to live in less than five-star accommodations. You may also need to be far away, and in some cases, out of touch with your family for days, weeks, and even months at a time.

Before you decide to pursue a career as a mercenary, be certain to examine the pros and cons of doing so, and speak with your family members, to ensure that they are also comfortable with the demands that will be placed upon you. You may want to consider speaking with a retired or current mercenary in order to get a first-hand account of what being a mercenary is really like.

Step 1: Learn Foreign Languages

As a mercenary, you may often be stationed overseas in foreign countries. Therefore, knowing one or more foreign languages may give you an advantage over other applicants when you are ready to apply for a job. If you can, study as many languages as you can while in high school or college. You can also pursue online language study.

If you have a specific area of the world in which you would like to work, take this into consideration when deciding what type of languages to learn. For example, if you are hoping to be stationed in the Middle East, learning to speak Arabic, Persian and/or Turkish, which are the most common languages in this area, could prove very valuable.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_East#Languages

Knowing how to speak foreign languages can not only help improve your chances of getting hired, but can also increase the number of different tasks you can perform. In many cases, translators are among the most sought after and valuable employees of mercenary companies. Being able to speak other languages also means that you will have a greater understanding of what's going on around you.

Step 2: Get in Shape

To get hired and maintain a job as a mercenary, you will need to be in peak physical condition. It is never too early to get in shape, so start developing all aspects of your physical health as early as you can. Consider taking martial arts courses as a way to develop physical strength and endurance, and to get some preliminary training in hand-to-hand combat.

In order to get into the type of physical condition required to be a successful mercenary, you will likely have to go above and beyond just training at your local gym, although this is a good starting point. You may want to consider hiring a personal trainer who can advise you on advanced physical training techniques. Another option would be to sign up for and attend a boot camp designed to simulate some of the conditions that you will be subjected to.

Step 3: Join the Military or Law Enforcement

  • Since you are pursuing a career as a professional soldier, it makes sense to get training as such before you apply with a private company. Most private security contracting firms either require applicants to have, or will look much more favorably on applicants who have military and/or professional law enforcement training. If you are serious about becoming a mercenary, consider one of more of the following to help prepare and train for your future career:
  1. Join the military, serve for three years and receive an honorable discharge
  2. Pursue a job or training with a local or national law enforcement agency
  3. If you do join the military or enter law enforcement, get as much training in as many areas as you can and attempt to get on a special operations team
  4. Take a related private training course, such as those offered at Blackwater USA

Step 4: Apply for a Job

Obtain and complete an application through a private security firm or one of the several mercenary companies. There are several American companies at which you can apply, including Blackwater USA, Global Dynamics and Triple Canopy. For most of the positions, you will need a driver's license and valid passport. If you apply for a position and your application is denied, find out why and take the necessary steps to ensure that your next application is more likely to be accepted.

Working as a soldier for hire is not for the weak or faint of heart. You will need to be in peak physical and mental condition, well-trained and willing to put your life in danger if need be. However, if you are adaptable, physically and mentally fit and enjoy being constantly challenged, becoming a mercenary may prove to be a rewarding career.
