Introduction
Marketing directors should have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in business. A common emphasis would be in marketing.
Marketing directors spend lots of time traveling and in meetings. As with any directorial position, marketing directors must know how to lead a team and direct them on how to finish projects efficiently and to the best of their ability.
Step 1: Go to College
Enroll in a university, and get your Bachelor's degree in business or communication. Ideally, you should major in Business with an emphasis in marketing.
While in college, find internships! Finding internships is actually not that difficult. Think about it, what company doesn't want a motivated college student who will work for free? Work in the marketing or public relations field. Even though you're not getting paid, put your heart into your work. Employers notice when you do your best!
Make connections with people you meet.
Step 2: Develop your Communication and Project Management Skills
So you've graduated college, congratulations! But that doesn't mean you should stop learning and improving your skills.
Make sure you know the ins and outs of public relations. You should also familiarize yourself with general advertising basics.
Step 3: Get a Job
Ask your intern supervisor if he has any paid positions available. If you've made a good impression, he may say "yes." If there are currently no open positions available, talk to whoever is in charge and leave your resume on file. Ask your contacts if they know of any job openings and to keep you in mind.
Work in the marketing or public relations field.
Step 4: Advance Your Career
Congratulations, you're almost there! Now that you have a job, perhaps as an assistant or manager, it's time to advance into the Marketing Director position.
Try applying at your company for a promotion. You can also send an application to other companies if you heard of an open position. Send both a resume and cover letter. Make sure to list your qualifications and work experience.
Experience and leadership are the most frequent reasons for getting promotions, so it pays off to participate in training programs or taking college education courses. Some companies offer free in-house or training at local colleges or universities, which may include courses in product management, international marketing, telemarketing and marketing communication. Always advantage of these opportunities!
Make contacts, and make positive impressions.
