Introduction
- Freight brokers, or property brokers, help companies who need to ship products find companies to transport those goods. A broker helps to ensure that the process of transporting freight from place-to-place runs smoothly. The freight broker serves as an intermediary, helping a shipper find a motor carrier and then negotiating the terms of a shipping deal.
Step 1: Education
- To become a freight broker, you may want to enroll in an educational course that can help you learn the ins and outs of the trucking industry. Courses may be offered online or in a classroom.
Step 2: Registration
- Freight brokers must register by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). To register:
- Fill out the OP-1 Application for Motor Property Carrier and Broker Authority
- File proof of insurance coverage. This includes:
- Surety Bond or Trust Fund Agreement of $10,000
- Submission of a BOC-3 Form
- Pay an application fee of $300
- The FMCSA says it will take four to six weeks for the application to be processed.
Step 3: Find a Job
- Once you have obtained FMCSA authority, you are ready to begin working as a freight broker. You must decide if you want to strike out on your own, or work with an established company. Many freight brokers are entrepreneurs who build their businesses from the ground up, drawing up marketing plans, advertising their services and networking to gain clients.
