Step 1: Consult an Expert
Before you begin sticking lit torches into your mouth, train with someone who has fire-eating experience. It is extremely easy for beginners to injure themselves, and this is not the sort of skill you want to teach yourself. Look in the yellow pages or on Google. You may get lucky and find a class, or you may have to request private instruction from a pro. -
Step 2: Perfect Your Technique
Here are the basics:- Use a torch specifically made for fire eating
- Find a clear space, away from any flammables
- Moisten your mouth well with spit
- Stand firmly on the ground with legs wide
- Tilt head all the way back
- Open mouth as wide as possible
- Take a deep breath
- Place torch close to mouth
- Do not inhale!
- Exhale slowly
- Practice moving the torch closer until you are eventually able to extinguish it with your breath or moisture from your spit
Step 3: Use Common Sense
Always take care not to burn yourself or anyone else. Be practical, and don't make the situation even more dangerous by performing in windy conditions, moving too close to your audience, or using toxic fuels or dangerous equipment. Also, never attempt to eat fire when there is no one else around to help you if something should go wrong. Safety should always be first in your mind.
