Introduction
Being a crab fisherman is not for everyone. Alaska crab fishing is the deadliest job in the world, and it isn't a whole lot safer in other areas. The hours are long, the work is laborious (to say the least), and you will be away from friends and family for months on end. However, the pay is exceptionally good, and the work can be very rewarding for the right people. -
Step 1: Toughen Up
Crabbing is not for the weak. Before you even think about setting foot on a crab boat, you need to build up your endurance and get into good shape. Hit the gym, go running, and be as active as possible. Take on a construction job or other physical work, so that you get to know how it feels to push your body. -
Step 2: Go to The Sources
If you live in the midwest or any other inland area, your odds of getting onto a fishing boat are pretty slim. If you are serious about crab fishing, go to where the jobs are. Head to places like Seattle or Alaska, where fishing is prevalent. Be sure you have a way back home, and enough money to survive for a while in case you don't find work. -
-
Step 3: Find Work
Your ultimate goal may be to fish for crab, but you will probably need to gain some experience wy working less intensive jobs in the industry before getting on to a crab boat. Go to the processors, or seek work on other types of fishing boats to familiarize yourself with the fisherman's life.- Once you feel ready, seek out boat captains and be ready to show them how serious you are about fishing, and how hard you have worked to get there. With enough dedication, you should be able to fulfill your dreams of crab fishing on the high seas.
