Introduction
- So, you're sick of getting arrested every time you get into one little fist fight at a bar. Or maybe you're ready to stand up for yourself when that bully comes to beat you up and steal your lunch money again. Then again, maybe you just want to try something new and get some exercise. Whatever your reason, boxing can be a great way to let out some aggression and maybe make some money in the process. Here's what you'll need to do to get into boxing.
-
Step 1: Get In Shape
- Boxers aren't very effective if they're out of shape. It's time to hit up the gym and get healthier.
- Cardiovascular workouts are essential; you won't last long in the ring if you need to catch your breath constantly. Hop on the treadmill and get running!
- You'll want to be strong if you're gonna throw a good punch. Use weight training to build muscle, particularly in your arms and shoulders.
- Hand/eye coordination is important in boxing. Boxers often use jump ropes to train.
-
Step 2: Learn Technique
- OK, so you've gotten into slightly better shape and you're now ready to start throwing a few punches. It's about time you learned some real boxing techniques.
- Find a gym that offers boxing instruction.
- Hire a coach to teach you essential techniques.
- In addition to throwing punches and learning defensive skills, you'll need to learn how to move your feet and wrap your hands properly.
- Hit the punching bags and sharpen your skills regularly. Work up to some sparring matches to get yourself ready for the real thing.
- Train for about six to twelve months before your first match.

Step 3: Get in a Tournament
- If you feel confident that you can knock someone your own size onto the mat for ten seconds, it's time to put yourself to the test and box for real.
- Check with USA Boxing to see when there are official matches in your area.
- Register and start showing the world what you've got!
- Win your way onto the Olympic team and go for international glory.
