Introduction
{{vote}}- This guide is a detailed walkthrough for How to Beat Level 1 of Halo 3 for Noobs. The first level ("Sierra 117") has 10 separate battles, each with its own trials and tribulations. Below you'll find tips and strategies for getting through the more brutal portions. In addition, we've included the locations of "Blind" and "Iron," the 2 Halo 3 Skulls in this level.
Battle #2
- Proceed onward to river's edge, where a Phantom will drop off a bunch of Grunts and a Brute. Crouch and hide until the Phantom leaves before you engage the hostiles.
- When ready, approach the pond and focus on the single Brute with the Assault Rifle until he's down.
- Mop up any remaining Grunts.
- Use the crouch-and-hide, come-out-and-fire, crouch-and-hide pattern of attack here.
Blind Skull
- After eliminating the hostiles, hug the rightmost mountain wall and walk towards the lake, moving through underbrush.
- You'll come to an isolated rock in the water with the Blind Skull on it.
- Push RB to pick it up, and get the first Silver Skull in the game.
- SKULL EFFECT: Your entire HUD disappears along with your shooting arm
Battle #3

- Before moving onward to the left into the wooded ledge, swap your Pistol for the downed Grunt's Spiker, a much stronger weapon.
- When ready proceed to the left to the new area.
- After downing the single Brute there, I recommend grabbing his Spiker for some dual-wield action here. The soldiers will pretty much kill everything else for you in this area.
- If they don't, hide behind the rocks and pick off the Grunts one-by-one until they're gone
Battle #4

- Move through the caves into the next area, a ravine with two high ledges on both sides.
- Go down to the right, where you'll find a Covenant Ammo container with Spiker ammo.
- Drop down into the ravine and proceed slowly up the hill. There are two armored Brutes and a slew of Grunts.
- Focus on the Brutes, walking over their corpses to refill your Spikers.
- You can swap your Spikers for a Needler here if you want, also a great weapon in close quarters
Battle #5

- Follow the soldiers to the next clearing, where you'll see a Brute up on a log bridge with a soldier in his grasp.
- Unload on him with the Spikers or Needler with no remorse, and he should go down.
- TIP: The Spiker will be a solid weapon for much of this level, simply because of how much available ammo there is scattered throughout on enemy Brutes and in ammo containers.
- Walk up and around and go over the log bridge, where you'll see metal tubing above; there's another Brute-and-Grunts bunch, along with shielded Jackals this time.
- Hide behind the rocks and focus on the Brute and Jackals. The soldiers should mop the rest of the Grunts
Battle #6

- Follow the soldiers through the caves.
- TIP: Upon exiting, I highly recommend going to left and swapping your Assault Rifle for the Battle Rifle you'll find on a rock next to a dead soldier there. Its sniping abilities will come in handy.
- When you come to the next canyon, use the Sniper Rifle to zoom in (R pad button) and oust the Brutes first, then any Jackals and Grunts.
- The two Pelicans will crash, nothing you can do about that.
Battle #7

- Move through the area to the left of the river before the dam, picking up the grenades and ammo amongst the dead.
- Before getting too close to the dam, pause a moment to snipe a couple Grunts and even kill some of the Brutes' armor from a safe distance if possible. The only trouble is they're vigilant about hiding when they are being shot, so you have to be fast.
- When ready hug the rock to the left and find a path up and around to the dam platform, where Jackals are waiting.
- Once you're up on the landing, it's grenade time. There's just too many enemies clustered together to not use grenades. Aim for the center of enemy clusters and aim low.
- Dodge and weave in and out of the boxes for cover, focusing on the Brutes, tossing grenades as you have them.
- WARNING: One of the Brutes has a Brute Shot, not something to mess around with. If you can, get as close as possible to him, crouching behind boxes, and then pin a grenade on him to take him out. At all costs stay out of his direct line of fire. Touch-and-go attack until he falls.
"Cavemen" Easteregg

- Proceed into the jungle, passing under a large metal tube over your head.
- Hug the leftmost mountain wall and continue.
- Jump onto the first isolated ledge you come to, jutting out from the mountainside (kill the Jackal first).
- Continue along the narrow ledge around the mountain's curve for about ten steps, until the ledge opens up slightly to your left.
- Turn around and look at the corner. There are 4 cavemen, the biggest holding a small teddy bear.
Battle #8

- Move back into the jungle. Be wary of Jackals up on the ridges with Carbines.
- Use the Battle Rifle to zoom in and pick off as many as you can before getting too deep into the ravine.
- A Phantom will drop off more enemies when you come to the ravine's opening.
- Once you've cleared out the Grunts that the Phantom dropped off, make your way to the right around the big rock corner.
- TIP: There's a Brute with a Brute Shot and some Grunts waiting to ambush you here. It's advisable to actually hang back on the other side of the rock and toss some grenades over the rock before they see you, rather than take on a Brute Shot at point-blank range.

Battle #9
- Go down to the left where you'll find a crashed Pelican and some grenades.
- More importantly, you'll find a Sniper Rifle. Swap one of your guns for this wonderfully useful weapon, and use it to wipe out most of the resistance on the metal bridge behind you from a safe distance.
- TIP: The Sniper Rifle can pwn an armored Brute in one shot if executed properly, let alone the Grunts that scramble about on the bridge.
Battle #10
- The Sniper Rifle is your pal in this last battle. Move through the caves and creep up to the valley's edge, where you should pick off as many Jackals, Grunts and Brutes as your ammo allows, before moving down into the fray.
- You'll see Johnson on the other side of the dam held prisoner, your ultimate destination.
- Once you're down on the dam's landing, move to the left around the backside of the empty building, taking out grunts as you go.
- From the inside of the building you can preemptively take out some of the enemy reinforcements on the other side of the dam dropped off by the Phantom with the Battle Rifle.
- When you're ready move up the stairs to the right and proceed slowly across the dam's bridge/corridor. There will be Brute Shot-toting Brutes galore, and in general a lot of hostiles.
- Crouch behind crates and be a grenade junky.
- WARNING: There's even a Covenant Chieftain with a Gravity Hammer a little further down the bridge, a terrible enemy with extremely powerful armor. You'll need either grenades, a Brute Shot or a Spiker to deal with him. Keep him at a distance or with one swing of his hammer you're done.
- When the bridge is clear head left and enter the building where Johnson is being held, holding RB to release him.
- TIP: When the Phantoms show up, don't leave the building. Hide in the building until they fully leave. You can't damage the Phantoms at this point in the game, and you'll just waste ammo or get killed. Let the Arbiter do his work.
- After the Phantoms leave and the final shootout ensues, either a Carbine or dual-wielded Spikers are recommended (available right there in Johnson's cell).
- Pick off the hostiles from through the building windows. When they're clear head to the Pelican in the middle of the dam bridge.
Iron Skull
- Facing the Pelican, turn left and jump onto a platform/catwalk and follow it all the way to the end.
- Jump up onto the higher platform and follow its path to the left around the edge of the building, until it terminates in a dark corner.
- There is the Iron Skull.
- SKULL EFFECT: If you die, the mission restarts. If you're playing co-op, the whole team restarts from the last saved checkpoint.
