Introduction
As you may well know, there are hundreds of different cell phones out there as well as several different carriers. Each phone and cell phone service has different options for backing up your contact or address book information. This guide will give you a general overview of the different ways in which cell phone contacts can be backed up. Three of the methods that will be covered include backing up on a SIM card, backing up on computer via usb cable, and backup subscription programs. -
Step 1: Back Up Contacts on SIM Card
Every phone has a SIM card, which is a little card that usually slides in the back of the phone by the battery. It is needed for your phone to work with your number. SIM cards also have the ability to save contact information on them. You may say, "well what good does it do backing up contacts on your SIM card if you lose your whole phone?" This is where a 2nd SIM card comes in handy. Often times when you upgrade to a new phone with a 2 year plan, it comes with a new SIM card. Now you have 2 cards. Use the 2nd card as your back up and keep it in a secure location separate from your phone. Periodically swap the old card into the phone and copy over your contacts. Then switch back to your original card. Important: make sure to save your contacts on your phone and on your SIM card before switching the cards and making the back up. -

Step 2: Copy Contacts to Computer Via USB Cable
Many cell phones these days have the ability to connect to computers via a usb cable. Usually the usb cable is specific to your phone model and must be purchased separately. Depending on your phone and carrier, there will often be a program needed to work with your phone on the computer. Once you have the cable and the program installed, you should be able to manage your cell phone information on the computer and back up your contacts. -
Step 3: Subscribe to Back Up Program with Cell Phone Service
Several cell phone companies offer a subscription based service that automatically backs up your contacts for you. If you don't mind paying a little extra each month, this method may work for you. Once you are subscribed, you don't have to worry about backing up your information because it is done automatically.http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/ringtones-downloads/mobile-address-book.jsp Note: It is always good to make a 2nd back up just in case something goes wrong and they lose your contact information. -
