In this video, Mahalo's makeup expert Katie Gurvin shows you how to perfectly apply red lipstick for your wedding day.
Step 1: Prep the Lips
Use a primer on your lips. This will allow your lip color to go on smoother. Apply it like you would lipstick or chapstick and let it set for a minute so that it has time to absorb into your lips.
With a concealer liner, go around the edge of the lip and smooth out any imperfections, blending with a brush or your fingers. This allows the liner to go on smoother.
Step 2: Line the Lips
Lip liner is like double-stick tape for your lipstick. Fill in the middle part of your lip like you're coloring with a crayon. Then, starting from the lower corner of your lip, make short, firm strokes towards the center at the edge of your lip.
Once you get to the center, start over at the other corner. Do the same for your upper lip, but start in the center and move outwards. Go back and correct as needed.
Step 3: Apply the Lip Color
Use a lip brush so that you can apply the lipstick crisply. Dab the brush in the lipstick and apply to your lips in layers until you reach your desire color.
Realistically, you want to choose a long-wearing lipstick because your wedding day is going to be long and full of eating, drinking and kissing, so you want your color to last.
Additional Tips and Suggestions
Apply foundation and powder before you begin.
- Once you're finished with your first coat of lipstick, blot your lips with a tissue and reapply a second coat of lipstick.
- If you need help picking a color, go to a makeup store and ask one of the salespeople to help you.
- If you're going with a dramatic lip color, down play the color of your eye shadow so that you makeup is balanced and not overwhelming.
Types of Red Lipstick
Blue-Red: This shade will make your teeth look whiter and is usually a safer bet for your wedding day.
Orange-Red: This shade is better if you have whiter teeth and auburn hair. Not everyone can pull it off, but it definitely has its place.
