Eyelashes can be a focal point of the face, and mascara helps to enhance the eyelashes and draw the eye. An eyelash curler helps open up the eye and make the eye more visible. Mascara provides dark contrast against the whites of the eyes, and makes lashes appear longer and thicker.
Working with your eyelashes can be tricky, but this guide will show you how to apply mascara and curl lashes using some simple techniques.

In this how-to video by Mahalo, makeup artist Davee Troublefield gives some tips on opening up the eyes by applying mascara and curling the eye lashes. A coating of mascara with a lengthening and thickening formula adds drama to any makeup look and helps make your eyes the focal point of your face.
Step 1: Gather your Materials
To create this look, you need two items:
- Lash Curler - A lash curler is a device that squeezes your lashes between two curved cushioned plates. Lash curlers are available in small sizes to curl a few lashes at a time, or large sizes to curl all of your lashes in one or two squeezes.
- Mascara - Choose a mascara with a lengthening and thickening formula to help your lashes stand out. Don't bother with a waterproof formula unless you plan to be out in the rain; waterproof formulas require harsher chemicals to remove.
Step 2: Curl your Lashes
Curling your lashes pulls the tips of your lashes up and away from your eyes, making your eyes look larger and more visible. To curl your lashes, take the lash curler in your hand and position it so that your lashes fall between the two curved bars. Gently squeeze the lash curler closed, and hold for a few seconds. Release, then remove the lash curler. Repeat this process across your lash line, then repeat with the other eye.
For lashes that are tough to curl, heated lash curlers are available. This tool is designed to be used after mascara is applied, to gently melt the waxes in the mascara and allow them to help keep your curl in place.http://sephora.com/browse/product.jhtml?id=P20039&categoryId=B70
Step 3: Apply your Mascara
Mascara is a dark pigment that is applied to the lashes to darken their color and make them look longer and thicker. Applying a coat of mascara creates a contrast with the whites of your eyes and making your eyes stand out. Mascara is available in a rainbow of colors and formulations, but the most common colors are black and brown.http://sephora.com/browse/section.jhtml?categoryId=S10510
Pull the want out from the mascara tube and sweep it along the length of your lashes from root to tip and from the inner portion of the eye to the outer edge of your eye. One coat should be enough to coat your lashes with an even layer, but feel free to go back and fill in areas you may have missed.
