How to Apply for Welfare

Are you having a difficult time paying for the needs of your family? If so, you may qualify for welfare benefits. The government has money set aside to help families in a bind, and you can apply for temporary assistance. To learn how to apply for welfare, just read through the steps in this guide.

Many families struggle to make ends meet at some time or another. If you are having a hard time taking care of basic necessities such as food, rent, or utilities, the Administration of Family Assistance may be able to help out. Keep in mind that welfare is not a permanent solution to financial hardship. However, it can temporarily help you provide for yourself and your loved ones while you get back on your feet.

Step 1: Understand the System

Welfare is funded federally, but expedited locally. The U.S. Department of Health Services runs the Office of Family Assistance, which oversees the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. This program is what people generally refer to when they speak of welfare.

  • This program offers funding to state and local programs so that they may help families in need. The goal of TANF is to help families achieve self-suffifiency through financial assistance as well as job skill development and family maintenance. http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/tanf/about.html

Step 2: Apply

To apply, contact your local Social Services or Human Services department. Although exact requirements will vary, you will likely need to meet the following criteria: http://www.survivalinsight.com/apply-for-tanf.html

  1. Family must usually consist of at least one adult and one child
  2. Family income must be under a set amount
  3. Welfare may only be received for 60 months over a lifetime in most cases
  4. Parents may be required to participate in programs, and children may be required to stay in school

Step 3: Work to Get Back on Your Feet

Because of the temporary nature of welfare assistance, it is vital that parents seek education, job training, and/or employment while receiving aid. The TANF program can only provide relief for a limited period of time, but it does offer a window of opportunity where parents are able to better their financial and social situation. If you take advantage of this opportunity, you may come out of the program far better off than when you entered it.
