Introduction
In the United States, welfare can come in many forms based on your life circumstances, financial condition and health concerns. The basic welfare program is Food Stamps that help provide supplemental foods for low to medium income families. Other welfare programs include WIC (women, infants and children), Medicaid and SSI Disability. Every program is federally funded, but is managed by individual states. The application process for the various welfare programs vary between states and between programs. While a few programs may only require an online application, most also require and in-person interview to confirm eligibility requirements. Step 1: Food Stamps or SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC

Step 2: Check Local Departments
Check the following departments for other welfare applications that may be online. Many states and agencies are in the process of putting applications online, so even if your agency and state are not listed, an application may be online soon.- Medicaid: Medicaid can be known by different names in each state. Contact your local health department or the Department of Health & Human Service to determine the application process in your area.
- Medicare: Sign up tools for Medicare Part A & B online is available at the Medicare Eligibility Tool on the Medicare.gov website.
- SSI Disability: SSI disability is only available by in-person sign up, usually at your local Health Department.
- Emergency Assistance: Most emergency food and shelter programs are not eligible for online enrollement. Check with your social services office or health department for the application process.
Step 3: Follow Up
While some welfare programs offer an online initial sign-up for benefits, most require an in-person interview, follow up visits and documentation of your situation.
