Step 1: Meet Eligibility Requirements for Children's Disability
Children must meet the following requirements to obtain children’s disability payments:- Must be under 18 years of age
- Must not earn more than $980 a month
- Family Income must be in the low income to medium income range.
- Must be labeled as having “marked and severe functional limitations” from a physical or mental condition
- The child’s condition:
- Must have been occurring for at least 12 continuous months
- Be expected to last for at least 12 months

Step 2: Apply for Children’s Disability Benefits
Applications for Children’s Disability SSI benefits are only done in person at you local Social Security office. Be prepared to furnish the following documents at your appointment to apply for Children’s Disability:
- Social Security Number
- Proof of Age (Birth Certificate)
- U.S. Citizenship proof or alien status record
- Proof of income for child and household
- Proof of Resources (bank statements, property records, etc.)
- Proof of living arrangements
- Medical reports and proof of disability
- Work History (if appropriate for your child)

Step 3: Find out if your Child is Accepted for Children’s Disability Payments
It usually takes 3 to 5 months for the Social Security Administration to review your child’s application for SSI benefits. However, the following conditions can qualify for immediate approval:- Total Blindness
- Total Deafness
- HIV
- Down Syndrome
- Cerebral Palsy
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Birth Weight under 2 pounds, 10 ounces
