How to Adjust the Shutter Speed on a Canon 60D DSLR

Canon, an international manufacturer of cameras since 1984, offers photo enthusiasts the Canon 60D DSLR 18 megapixel camera. Packed full of features from HD video shooting to DIGIC 4 Image Processor, the sleek and stylish camera is the recipient of PC Magazine’s Service & Reliability award. The user-friendly menu, viewable on the camera’s 3-inch LCD display screen, allows photographers to control camera settings with ease. One such setting is the camera’s shutter speed. It’s important to adjust the shutter speed for optimal video shooting.

180 Degree Rule

180 Degree Rule states that angle at which the shutter moves relative to the sensor must be maintained at 180 degrees.

180 Degree Rule = Double Frame Rate

Example: 30fps=1/60 sec; 24fps=1/50 sec (fbs = frames per second)

Shooting at 30fbs, the shutter speed needs to be set at 1/60 of a second. When shooting at 24fbs, the shutter speed need to be set at 1/50 of a second.

Overexposure

Maintaining the 180 degree shutter rule will provide the truest rendition and highest quality of the video being captured. This rule does create problems as the images tend to appear very overexposed. To remedy that problem, dial down the F-stop or aperture until the proper exposure is reached.

Shallow Depth and ISO

To compensate for the lost shallow depth of field that DSLR cameras are known for, place a neutral density filter in front of the lens to cut some light and maintain a lower aperture.

Consider adjusting the ISO setting to adjust the exposure on your images.
