How to Adjust Frame Rates on a Canon 60D DSLR

The Canon 60D DSLR enables the camera user to take video from the camera. This can be shot in up to a 1080p display. This can be done in two different speeds. The speed of the shot indicates the number of frames per second that the camera is shooting.

While it would stand to reason that the more frames a second that the camera shoots, the higher the quality, this is not the case. The more frames that are shot a second the slower the video appears to be going. This can cause the quality of the images to suffer.

While the Canon 60D DSLR has two 60 frames per minute functions, these are considered slow motion views and cause heavy image issues. It is not recommended that these are used for film making. The same effect can be had in editing, but without causing the image quality to lessen.

In Depth Frame Rate Adjustment

Once the camera is on, press menu. This will bring up the video options screen. Scroll over to the second movie setting menu. This will be illustrated by a movie camera and 2 dots. Hit set in order to select this option. Scroll down to the first option "Move Recording Size." Click set in order to select this option. This will be your frame rate selection area. Click the option that best suits the need of the sitution by scrolling over to it and clicking set.

Quick Control Frame Rate Adjustment

Click the quick control button. The frame rate can be seen at the bottom left of the screen. This can be changed by scrolling over the options and clicking set in order to set the new rate. This method is good for immediate changes during the film shooting.

Frame Rate Meanings

There are 4 frame rate options on the Canon 60D DSLR. The first of these is the 1920x1080 30. This is a high-resolution image being shot at 1080p, or the highest quality possible for the camera. The 30 indicates the frames per second and this speed will emulate other video or camcorders. The next option is the 1920x1080 24. This is also a high resolution image, but the quality is more akin to that of a professional cinamatic camera.

The next two frame rate options include the 1280x720 60 and the 640x480 60 options. These are high speed options, but the quality of the film suffers and image quality decreases. It is not recommended that these options are used to create film. All slow motion options can be recreated during the editing process.
