Houston History
Named after General Sam Houston, the city was founded in 1837 and quickly developed one of the busiest port and railroad industries in the country. After oil was discovered in the area around the turn of the century, the city experienced another population boom. Today, the economy of Houston is focused on energy, technology and aeronautics.
