In 2008, Houston received top ranking on Kiplinger's Personal Finance Best Cities of 2008 list which ranks cities on their local economy, employment opportunities, reasonable living costs and quality of life. Houston also ranked second on the annual Fortune 500 list of company headquarters, first for Forbes Best Cities for College Graduates, and ranked first on Forbes list of Best Cities to Buy a Home.
In August 2005, the Houston Astrodome, (also known as the 8th Wonder of the World) became a shelter to 150,000+ people from New Orleans who evacuated from Hurricane Katrina. In September 2005, ~2.5 million greater Houston area residents evacuated when Hurricane Rita approached the coast, fortunately with limited damage to the city. This was the largest urban evacuation in the history of the United States.
Houston is the home of the energy company, Enron scandal in 2001. It was found that Enron had used a variety of "creative" accounting methods that were fraudulent and thereby inflated revenues to extremely high levels. Enron was forced to file for bankruptcy in December of 2001 causing its stock price to fall from $90.00 to $.50 on the NYSE, creating a disastrous financial situation for many employees and share-holders.
