Hot Cross Buns are a type of sweet bread commonly served on Easter or Good Friday. They are named for the symbolic cross markings on the top.
History
Hot Cross buns are widely recognized as an Easter and Good Friday treat. The mark on the bread was a symbol of the holy cross. The bun also may have had a history before Christianity. Saxons ate the bread in honor of the goddess Eostre- the cross divided the bun into four parts, symbolizingthe four quarters of the moon. Traditional recipes use Raisins, Currants and Cinnamon. Cocoa and Chocolate are used to make a chocolate variation of the bun.
