Horus

Horus was an Egyptian god of the sun and sky, who took the form of a hawk or a man with the head of a hawk. He represented Upper Egypt, but wore the unified crown of both Upper and Lower Egypt. Pharaohs identified themselves with Horus while alive. Once they had died, pharaohs were identified with Osiris.http://www.nemo.nu/ibisportal/0egyptintro/1egypt/index.htm

In earlier Egyptian mythology, Horus was the son of Nut, the sky god, and Geb, the earth god, and sibling to Osiris, Isis, Set and Nephthys. In this version, he was sometimes referred to as Horus the Elder. In later Egyptian mythology, Horus was the son of Isis and Osiris and in this form was sometimes known as Horus the Child.http://ksuweb.kennesaw.edu/~shagin/309eyeofhorus.pdf Horus represented protection and courage and was in an endless struggle with Set, the god of chaos.http://www.nemo.nu/ibisportal/0egyptintro/1egypt/index.htm

Horus Mythology

Set killed Horus' father Osiris. First he trapped him in a sarcophagus and threw it in the Nile River, but Horus' mother Isis rescued Osiris. Then, Set managed to dismember Osiris and cast the pieces of him around Egypt. Isis managed to reassemble him, and Osiris became the king of the dead. In this form, he visited Horus and asked him to avenge his death by killing Set. Horus agreed, and attacked Set. The advantage in the battle never stayed with either god for long, and the battle was said to have continued indefinitely.http://faculty.mdc.edu/jmcnair/Joe12pages/The%20Osiris%20Legend1.htm

In one instance, Set managed to blind Horus by pulling out the eye and tearing it apart. Thoth, the god of wisdom, managed to heal his eye. The representation of the Eye of Horus began to be used as a magical charm.http://gwydir.demon.co.uk/jo/egypt/horus.htm It was also said to represent strength and self-sacrifice, although in some cases it was said that one of his eyes represents the sun and the other, the one Thoth healed, represents the moon.http://www.mnsu.edu/emuseum/prehistory/egypt/religion/mythology.htm
