Horses have played an important role in human transportation, agriculture, mythology, and art. Horses have played a significant role in human civilization for thousands of years, by helping to plow fields and aid in transportation. They were a prominent feature in human wars until the late 19th century. Today, horses are generally used for entertainment and leisure, either through parades and cultural shows, horse races or other equestrian based events such as polo and show jumping. Horseback riding is still a popular pastime. In some areas and cultures, horses are still a necessity for helping to provide food and transportation needs.
