History:
James Spangler of Canton, Ohio invented the vacuum in 1907. He was a department store janitor and thought all the dust from sweeping was causing his asthmatic cough. He built a vacuum out of a box, a motor, a broom handle and a pillowcase. He gave one of these machines to his friend Susan Hoover. She in turn showed her husband W.H. "Boss" Hoover who was at the time working in leather products manufacturing. W.H. Hoover made Spangler his partner and began vacuum production in 1908.
