Honiara History

The Solomon Islands are believed to have been inhabited for over 5,000 years. The Europeans did not "discover" the land until 1568, however, when Spanish explorer Alvaro de Mendana discovered gold in the area. He named the islands "Isles of Solomon" because he believed the gold belonged to King Solomon.http://www.welkamsolomons.com/info/history/main.html

Although Honiara did not become the official capital of the Solomon Islands until 1952, it was built to replace the capital of Tulagi at the close of World War II. The current site of the capital was near the area where the Guadalcanal Campaign took place during World War II.http://erwin.bernhardt.net.nz/oceania/solomonshoniarakukum_a.html
