Honduras, officially the Republic of Honduras, was formerly known as Spanish Honduras, but changed its name to differentiate it from British Honduras (now Belize). It is located in Central America, bordered to the north by the Gulf of Honduras, to the south by the Gulf of Fonseca, to the southwest by El Salvador, to the southeast by Nicaragua, and to the west by Guatemala.
Brief History
At one time a Spanish colony, Honduras gained independence in 1821, and a freely elected government was established in 1982.
It is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere and since its economy relies greatly on coffee and banana exports, it is particularly vulnerable to natural disasters, such as Hurricane Mitch in 1998.
