The 2010 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 11, spread across a handful of cities in South Africa. The tournament is broken into a group stage, which consists of three games for each squad, and a knockout stage, in which the 16 teams advancing from the group stage are whittled down to one tournament champion in typical tournament bracket fashion.
Each team is guaranteed at least three games in the World Cup, one against each of their counterparts in the round robin group. Assuming they finish among the top two point-scorers in the group (one point for a tie, three for a win), a team advances to the knockout stage, where they potentially have up to four more contests, should they advance to the finals. Typically, a team rests for four or five days between contests, which makes fitness a major issue and the tournament something of a grind.
In total, there are 32 teams playing in 64 games over the length of the World Cup. The World Cup expanded to 32 teams only after the 1994 event (which featured 24 teams and 52 total games), and has remained in the present format for the four World Cups since (including the 2010 version). http://soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/fixtures?cc=3888&ver=global
Full Schedule
The only certain games for Honduras are the three first round contests. That is, June 16 against Chile, at 7 a.m. Eastern time; June 21 versus Spain, at 2 p.m.; and versus Switzerland on June 25, also at 2 p.m., in the final game of the first round. If Honduras accumulates enough points to advance to the knockout stages of the World Cup, they will continue. If not, they head back to Central America. The matches against Chile and Spain will be televised on ESPN, while the closing contest against the Swiss will be broadcast on ESPN2. Additionally, all of the games will be available through ESPN360, the company's online channel. http://www.espnmediazone3.com/us/2010/01/espn-inc-2010-fifa-world-cup-schedule/
Assuming that Honduras advances, their next contest would either be on June 28 at 2 p.m., or June 29 at 2 p.m., depending on whether they finish in first or second place in their group. (Only the first two in each group advance). Both games are to be carried by ESPN. http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/germany2006/index.html
