  • According to the Honda Motor Company, the Honda FCX Clarity will be the first mass-produced hydrogen fuel cell-powered car. The Japanese automaker began producing the car at its new model center in Tochigi on June 16, 2008, and hopes to lease 200 of the highly fuel efficient vehicles in the United States and Japan over the next three years.Bloomberg: Honda May Mass-Produce FCX Clarity Fuel-Cell Car in 10 Years (June 16, 2008)

The FCX Clarity will differ from other alternative fuel-powered vehicles, such as hybrids and electric cars, in that it will require no gasoline whatsoever, and will never have to be plugged in. The FCX Clarity will run on electricity generated when the car's fuel cell combines hydrogen stored on board with oxygen in the air. The resulting power will allow the Clarity to be driven 270 miles on a single tank of hydrogen, and because of its design and technology, the car can be started at temperatures as low as 30 degrees Celsius.

Nanonickel to Replace Platinum as a Catalyst in Fuel Cells and in Other Applications

    1. QuantumSphere is working on a nanopowder as a catalyzt for future fuel cells, batteries, and hydrogen generation.

    2. Nano Cathodes produce very active and reproducible gas diffusion electrodes

    3. The race is to replace platinum. To achieve this goal, they have developed a line of pure nickel, copper, silver and other metallic nanoparticles

    4. Nanonickel has the potential to replace platinum as the main catalytic material in a variety of hydrogen fuel cells with a 75% reduction in cost.
