  • History and Quality

Honda's first vehicles were scooters with mounted small motors, a cheap and fuel-saving transportation that Japan needed after its World War II defeat. The company began manufacturing cars in 1960, almost exclusively for Japanese consumers. During the next few decades Honda gradually expanded to international markets to become the world's fifth largest automaker.

Honda cars enjoy the reputation of highly reliable vehicles that can run for decades without undergoing a single major repair. Honda's marketing strategy counts on the products' quality as the company's most valuable promotional asset. This leads to cutting down on commercials, especially for the American market, and relying almost entirely on positive word of mouth.

  • Competitors

Honda trails behind Toyota and is ahead of Nissan in production and sales in Japan. Its principal national competitors in the motorcycle industry include Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha. According to 2008 reports, during that year Honda outsold most of its competitors in the United States because its efficient engines consume less of the expensive fuel.
