The home phone is a communication system installed in the home and usually consists of either a hardwired landline or a VoIP system. The hardwired phone consists of a dedicated line connecting the dwelling to a terminal on the street and thence to the phonecompany’s main system. A VoIP system uses a broadband Internet connection to connect to the providers system. http://homephoneservice.com/
The traditional stylehome phone comes with a direct wired connection to the telephone outlets in each room. This type of telephone may consist of either a rotary or “pulse” dial method which indicates the number desired by a series of pulses for each digit or the tone dial method which uses different frequencies of audio tones to indicate each digit. http://homephoneservice.com/
Home Phone History
The telephone is a direct descendant of the telegraph. Two men both of whom had been working on improvements to the existing telegraph system came up with the idea of a communication system that would carry voice transmissions. Alexander Graham Bell filed a patent on such a system on February 14, 1876 and a few hours later Elisha Gray filed a caveat, the intent to file for a patent within 3 months, on a similar device. The patent was awarded to Bell on the basis of a prior filing time as well as the fact that he filed an actual patent rather than a caveat. http://www.telephonymuseum.com/telephone%20history.htm
The manual switching board was invented in 1878 allowing multiple telephones to be connected together. The first switchboard operators were teenage boys but within a few years women began taking over because the boys were impatient and rude to phone customers. http://www.telephonymuseum.com/telephone%20history.htm
Western Union used Elisha Gray’s patent application to establish the American Speaking Telephone Company. The actual system used was developed by Thomas Edison and was better than Bell’s existing methods. Bell proceeded build a newer, better transmitter than the one created by Edison and then used this as the basis to form the American Bell Telephone company. American Bell then filed a lawsuit against Western Union and proceeded to win the case. http://www.telephonymuseum.com/telephone%20history.htm
The next improvement was made by a Kansas City undertaker hwo created the automatic telephone which would allow a person to connect with another telephone by pushing buttons instead of talking to an operator. http://www.telephonymuseum.com/telephone%20history.htm
As the telephone moved into and through the 20th century more and more improvements were made bringing the telephone to an increasing customer base. Almost anyone can have a telephone in their home now and those that are unable to get traditional service now have the option of using cellular systems that can be used from a large number of locations. http://www.telephonymuseum.com/telephone%20history.htm
